Director General of seafarers Affairs, specialized and international organizations of PMO: The World Maritime Day Ceremony, highlighting "Seafarers: At the core of shipping’s future" will be hosted by the Ports and maritime Organization in Tehran in accordance with full observance of health protocols.
Referring to the history of World Maritime Day, Ali Akbar Marzban said: The International Maritime Organization (IMO) celebrates September 30 as World Maritime Day, and every year a ceremony is held in London to commemorate this day. All member states are also called upon to hold a variety of programs focusing on seafarers' issues.
Annually, with the approval of the Council of the International Maritime Organization, a theme is defined for this day, and this year, the theme of the International Maritime Day is "Seafarers: At the core of shipping’s future".
Stating that the maritime industry has three pillars of ships, ports and seafarers The Director General of seafarers Affairs, specialized and international organizations of PMO highlighted that Seafarers are at the core of the maritime industry.
Marzban emphasized that in 2020 and 2021 maritime and port activities were exposed to many issues with the outbreak of the Corona virus. seafarers became faced many problems such as vaccination, change of crew in different countries, termination of the contract and the obligation to be on board after the expiration of the contract.
Another challenge for seafarers was the lack of adequate access to welfare facilities and medical services in the ports of different countries, caused by the pandemic. these issues led the International Maritime Organization to choose this year’s theme "Seafarers: At the core of shipping’s future" and call on all countries to respect the rights of seafarers and not allow the spread of the corona virus to cause violations of the rights of seafarers.
