The seventy-seventh meeting of the Marine Environment Protection Committee was held with the aim of reviewing the prevention of air pollution and improving energy efficiency in ships, preventing and controlling pollution caused by plastic waste at seas.
The Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) addresses environmental issues under IMO’s remit. This includes the control and prevention of ship-source pollution covered by the MARPOL treaty, including oil, chemicals carried in bulk, sewage, garbage and emissions from ships, including air pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions. Other matters covered include ballast water management, anti-fouling systems, ship recycling, pollution preparedness and response, and identification of special areas and particularly sensitive sea areas.
Nader Pasandeh; Director General of Maritime Safety and Protection of the Ports and Maritime Organization stated that in the 77th session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee, the issues of prevention of air pollution and improvement of energy efficiency in ships, prevention and control of pollution caused by plastic waste at seas and ships’ water management were discussed.
Representatives of the Iranian government chaired by the Ports and Maritime Organization (General Directorate of Maritime Safety and Protection), the Environmental Protection Organization, the National Iranian Oil Company and the Shipping Company of the Islamic Republic of Iran attended the meeting.
